We've already started getting offers (or outright gifts) of old baby stuff from friends and acquaintences. Dean's friend Charlie (whose youngest is about two and a half) just moved her out of the crib, and they've offered that to us. Also, both my parents and Dean's parents have offered us their old cribs. So we've got three options to choose from, and we'll have to construct and examine each to see which we want. We may go with Charlie's, so there will be cribs available at both grandparents' houses.
A while ago, Dean was over at Charlie's and saw a garage sale going on next door. Dean bought a jogging stroller for $30 and then was gifted with a baby moniter, a baby bath, and an infant car seat.
Yes, yes, before you all comment and say that we need to be cautious of hand-me-down car seats--we know. We intend to look it up online, and probably have a fireman or someone certified examine it to make sure it's okay. If it turns out it was recalled ten years ago or is just not up to current safety codes--hey, it was free, and we're only out the time we took to look it up. And if it is safe, then we saved at least a hundred dollars!
Also, three of Dean's coworkers have pregnant wives as well (we think there might be something in the water at Avaya.) The one who's the farthest along (due in June) gave us a bunch of books: What to Expect While You're Expecting, Baby Bargains, a name book, and What to Expect During the First Year. I'm not sure why they gave us the last one since their baby isn't here yet, but heck, it's free info.
Our big project right now is that Dean is working on getting his old photos put into albums. They're currently spread out all over our spare room. Pretty soon (hopefully after he's done) we'll rearrange the bedrooms to turn one into the nursery. Then we can put all our baby stuff in one place and get down to the business of setting up the nursery and seeing what we need/want.
